Awesome indoor, architectural, invisible hanging setup

    Hey folks.
I just finished this project up and I am really proud of the way it turned out, so I wanted to share it.
A few years ago when I tried out hammock camping, I got hooked and shortly became a full-time indoor hanger. I have never found a more comfortable way to sleep that is better for my back than in my Blackbird XLC. So to have a setup indoors, I built this stand here and shared it with the forums:
    https://hammockforums.net/forum/show...=simple+strong

The stand works great, but it takes up plenty of floor space, and it's made of unsightly fence posts. It's also not super storage-friendly. For reference, here is a pic of my rec room that I was using it in:

So, when I started a big remodel of the rec room, I wanted to have something built-in and a little more decorative to hang with. I didn't just want to use hanging hooks into the studs, because I am a big guy and I didn't want to deal with the large shear forces on a couple interior wall studs night after night. I just don't trust it to hold up in the long run. So, I still wanted something with a "ridge pole" of sorts to combat any shear force. So, I used some 4x4 posts, wrapped in column facades, with a decorative header facade covering a 2x "ridge pole" between them and attached to the ceiling joist.

Then I figured to make use of the empty space and make this a "10 second deploy" hammock setup, I made the columns openable to store my hammock and suspension. I split the 'doors' into a large lower and a small upper one so only the small upper is open at night and doesn't get in the way at all. I am super pleased with how this worked out.

Here is the same space as I had the old stand:

And the columns closed up. Looks like part of the room decor.

    Hammock storage in the column:

I made the column have a smaller upper section of the 'door' so it would be minimal while in use:

And the hammock deployed. Takes about 10 seconds to set up or take down.

And here is the 'ridge pole' before it was covered

And for reference, the trim style of the room it is matching. It really does just look like a fancy detail of the room, not a hanging stand. My wife approves.

That looks amazing! Sometime after the pandemic ends I might ask to come over and see that in person.

That is a beautiful setup. I may steal this idea if I ever buy a house instead of rent.
