Multiple layered quilts or one to rule?

Just getting into backpacking after over 40 years, and getting into the whole hammock unIverse. Initially I went with the typical 20 degree TQ and UQ setup and it works great for summer/fall ( haven’t done a spring trip yet ).
But thinking about a bit of winter camping in our cold Upper Peninsula weather. I’ve ordered a 40 degree UQ to layer with my 20. Now thinking top quilts. But as my thinking and investigation has gone on I have a question. Do I go the same route with a TQ set up or just get a zero degree TQ?
Here is my thinking so far. I can get a HG Economy Burrow zero degree that goes about 2lbs, or go with a 40 degree and layer with my 20 degree UGQ, carry weight of the two being close to the single zero. With layered TQ I think there could be issues with one sliding off of the other so loss of coverage/heat retention.
Please regale me with your wisdom and insights.

I think you will be fine with two quilts.

In a hammock there is not much opportunity for something to 'slide off' of you. The hammock hugs up around your body in such a fashion that it would be hard for that to happen.

Similarly, the notion that down can 'fall off the sides of you' with a horizontally baffled quilt, in practice really doesn't happen in a hammock. Well, at least not in a properly filled quilt.

Depending on your pack, you might have issues with bulk carrying 2 UQs and 2 TQs. If bulk isn't an issue, then should be ok.

The only other potential issue is how you use the quilt. I've never doubled up, but I imagine that stuffing one TQ inside the other might compress the down. For ya'll that double up TQs, does one at least have a zipper footbox that you open up and drape the quilt over you, or can you make it work with both quilts having sewn footboxes?

With our winter snow levels I would have my gear in a “Polk” to pull behind me.

Won't 2 less warm UQs weigh more than a single zero rated, in addition to more bulk? Looking at the standard HG incubator 40F at 18.9 oz + 20F at 25 oz = 43.9 oz. The single zero is 30 oz. Should be the same relative increase for the TQs, except no suspension weight to be added. I realize that if you are using a pulk this won't be very important, unless you are out when there is not much snow. Still, something to keep in mind.

I think I would try the 2 UQs and maybe dress a bit warmer to sleep in my 20° TQ, generally your bottom insulation is much more important, you may find that the 2 UQs combined with your current TQ is completely adequate depending on the conditions.

I think you need to see if Winter backpacking takes for you or not before you get that 0º.
    Just my 3¢ worth.
Layering works. Just put the thinner width TQ inside the other.

Costco down blankets make cheap and easy top quilt boosters.

I don’t like the restrictions of a sewn foot box so I didn’t and won’t go that route. So I am going with a 2nd TQ in 40 degree - a Premium Burrow. Then it can do double duty and if winter camping isn’t my bag I can still have 2 usable quilts.

Thanks for the help, I appreciate it.

Did you purchase one TQ in a wider size than the other? Have you tested this system? Curious how this worked out for you.
