Looking for info about Porcupine Mountains in winter.

My wife said let’s go to the Porcupine Mountains tomorrow night so this a last minute quick trip. I have been to the Porkies several times during the summer months but never in winter. Looking at their website the roads are closed during the winter months.

Does anyone have parking info and suggestions on a good route from a parking area? Preferably a loop about 10-15 miles round trip.

    Thank You.

I would try to call and see what the situation is. If the roads are closed it would be hard to get to the trail heads. Plus with Michigan’s COVID restrictions there might be some issues. We just got snow last night and the west side of the U.P gets a lot more than we do. Let me know how it goes eh.

The gate will be closed by the parking to the Whitetail Cabin. A group of friends and myself do our annual winter mancation there. We got a decent 12 to 14 mile hike going up the escarpment and north to Lake of the Clouds and back to Whitetail 2.

I’ll be roughing it in Whitetail cabin next week. Unfortunately the snow conditions are low this year. Spoke the other day with the ranger and was told 12” inland and less by the lake. I have never seen it that low. Guess we’ll be backpacking, not using pulks this year. It will be more difficult to melt snow. Hoping for a run off stream. They do have a winter map of the Porkies on line. Shows the ski trails and cabins. The view from either the top or bottom basin of Lake of the Clouds is pretty. Those trail maps are also available. The ranger station has printed maps. The last time I had Whitetail we hung our hammocks outside to sleep and used the cabin for everything else. Hmmm may do it again

If you’ve never used the cabins you probably would be pleasantly surprised. They supply the wood, bunks, table, pots, pans, utensils, broom, mop and your own personal outhouse . You bring candles or lamps, sleeping bag, and food. Great place to bring those who don’t wish to sleep out in the cold.

Same for the yurts! Highly recommend. Fun to experience.

Thanks for the info. I figured the cabins and yurts would be full every weekend for the winter. They were......except for this weekend. One was open so we booked it.

    Thanks again.
