    Amsteel Skin Irritation

I've been splicing some amsteel recently, and it definitely seems to mildly irritate my skin. It feels like fiberglass insulation irritation , only much milder. A faint stinging/itching sensation. Has anyone else had a similar experience? I'm wondering if it's caused by UHMWPE fibers, or maybe an allergy to the coating on the cord?

    Thanks!

No reaction to Amsteel here - but I’ve clearly felt the “fiberglass itch” before - in a fiberglass environment. So I know what you are referring to.

I have found some color on my hands when working with Amsteel tinted other than gray.
In order to see what few have seen, you must go where few have gone. And DO what few have done.

I’ve never had an irritation from Amsteel. It’s possible you might have an allergic reaction to the dye or the threads. Try another color and see if you still have a reaction. If not, it could be the color... but if so, you could be allergic to the threads.

Thanks all. The irritation doesn't last long, but it sounds like it's just me!

When I've spent too long splicing or had a difficult time with a few I've gotten a bit of "rope burn" on my fingers. I have learned to slow down and work with the rope. It usually gets me when splicing ZingIt.

Besides John's valid point... Were you by chance splicing amsteel with reflective tracers? That stuff can be excessively rough and may even have stiff enough fibers to cause a bit of that fiberglass type itch.

The only one that really sucks to work with is green dynaglide. The color/wax coating they put on it is quite thick and requires you to break it up more.
