5th Annual SW MO Frozen Butt Hang Winter 2020

    Good Morning Everyone!

It's time to start planning the Winter 2020 Frozen Butt Hang! IIRC we generally shoot for the first weekend of the New Year. New Year's day is on a Friday this year and I know many businesses are closed this day. Hopefully, it will allow a long 3 day weekend for some.

Sticking to tradition on the date, where would everyone like to go this year? I missed the hang last year for the first time but I plan on being there this year.

I think I might be intereste in attending. I'll watch for more details. Just curious, are kids welcome or no? My 13yo is getting into hammocks and might be interested also

Thanks for kicking this off, Br@nch, and good to see you on the forum again! Count me in for this year's FBH. Possibly the wife as well, depending on the weather forecast. Anywhere y'all decide to go is fine.

doowahderek, all ages are welcome, for sure! Hope you can join us!

I hope you can make it! As -20 replied, kids are always welcome. All of the hangs we've had in the past have been family-friendly.

I do not know what your experience level is but one I thing I should mention for those attending who may be brand new to hiking/camping--I was extremely unprepared for the first annual hang back in 2015 or 2016. The temps the first night got down to -2 F. I made it but it was a new kind of cold I had never experienced while camping! If it weren't for borrowed gear from Gideon, I would've ended up in the car long before 6 AM.

Everyone has to start somewhere but when temps get really low and you are on the top of a mountain or a long way from your car, it can get real very quickly, especially if it rains or you get wet. But I learned a massive amount and I was 90% ready for our second annual HF hang. That’s what I love about these hangs-learn a lot from friendly people.

Note to all, cotton kills if you get wet (rain or sweat) and it is cold outside. Even 55 F can pose a serious threat in wet cotton. For those who are newer to hiking (including myself) check out this link for a great explanation. https://sectionhiker.com/why-does-cotton-kill/

My pleasure and glad to be back! Life gets me sometimes and I get wrapped up in adulting---then I forget to make time for myself. Looking forward to some trail time, seeing everyone again and meeting Mrs. Twentybelow if she can make it.

I'm a habitual overpacker when going camping. I normally car camp so hopefully any location we use will be somewhere I can get my gear to. Being a big guy all my gear is big, so if it's going to be real cold I can't put as much in my pack as I should have to be safe. If I remember correctly there's usually some long hike involved to get to the sites used in the past.
