    Dry Sandstone Country... Oz

Quick road trip out to Isla Gorge National Park, Qld.

Heat shimmering mirages, dry creeks beds, stray roadside goats & cattle, grey kangaroo's, seemingly endless straight miles heading inland, fuel stops getting wider & wider apart, remote one horse towns...

Explored a few ridges, weather formed overhangs, bat caves, short tunnels, knolls & down climbable saddles, eyes tracing out walking routes for the coming cool season...not now, way too hot during the dry heat of summer. (Area hit 40°c earlier in the week)

No bushflies. After laying in the shade on warm flat piece of sandstone with my eyes closed for a while, hands behind my head, I set up on the edge of the escarpment hoping for some cooling evening breezes. Tarpless...rarely rains out here.

Crescent moon & star filled heavens seem bigger, brighter & clearer out here. Mozzies whined outside the bugnet. Surprisingly cool overnight so I pulled the top quilt stashed at my feet, over myself. A Snugpak Antarctic mat for bottom insulation also did its job.

Just what I needed, a little adventure, exploration, isolation, surrounded by calming nature...now the research begins for waterholes & natural springs in the park, prepwork for a cool season walk. Locating water will be the key...

    Recharged.

    Cheers kac1269,
Google xmesh stove and you will find a review, video, more pics & where to buy...this is the newer adjustable version for different diameter alcohol stoves or you can join two older versions together for larger wider based pots/pans. Thin & light.

Looks like a fantastic trip, beautiful scenery. I love exploring areas like that. The mornings just before sunrise are some of my favorite scenes out in the desert.
I'm liking your traveling rig too, bike etc.

    Thanks Crazytowm3,
I'd head back out there again this weekend if I could...I've already marked all known permanent springs & semi permanent waterholes on my map.
I'll just have to be patient and wait until the xmas wet season is over & temps start to drop in May.

Usually use a insulated hammock which is great for cool creek valleys & high summit hangs where I live, but no good way out west where it's so hot & arid.
So changed to a double layer...I can use it as is, throw in a emergency foil blanket, soft synthetic or air mat between layers, much more versatile in the outback. Same versatility for top insulation, either nothing, thin synthetic sheet or light top quilt.

Bike was birthday gift to myself...before I get to old to ride !

Nice report & pics! Looks like really cool place to camp & explore. Gonna have to check out that windscreen too.

I do a little motorcycle camping myself here & there and enjoy it when I get the opportunity. Is that a Kawasaki KLR in your pics? I ride a BMW K1200S & R1150GS when I'm camping off the bike.

Cheers ObdewlaX...yes it's a KLR, i use to be into bikes in my youth & hired them when traveling around asia, so I thought I'd revisit those happy memories....before I struggle to get my leg over the seat.

They've always been in my blood, I just had to make a few sacrifices along the long winding road we call life, to be able to hop back on now. No regrets.

The youngster within me couldn't wait 4months for the cool season to kick in....

Different route out this time, no miles & miles of long straight highways heading west, inland.
Rolling hills, winding roads & small country towns...a little slower but much more interesting.

Tarpless hang again...watching for all too brief shooting stars & slow moving satellites. Still hot during the day & cool at night. The area must of had a sprinkling of rain recently because there's a tinge of green in this arid landscape.
Overnight dried fruit for brekky. Turns dried leathery mixed fruit into plump, soft & juicy morcels, just add water & leave overnight...away from trouble seeking possum's.
