40 Degree Underquilt Question - Overstuff 1oz or not?

Thoughts here? Just a waste of money to add an 1oz to a 40 degree one?

I already have a 20 degree UQ so this is really a summer one and/or loaner quilt. I'd also use it in winter to stack.

FYI: Hammock Gear Incubator or Phoenix is what I'm looking at. Still going back and forth there.

$10 is hard to "waste" in any situation aside from holding a lighter to some bills and burning it! Especially with good gear. Skip a meal at Wendy's once and know you're putting that money to good use for years...decades to come. 1oz doesn't hurt and only adds warmth and eliminates thin spots after down shifts.

I agree with OneClick for the same reasons. If your intention is to get extra warmth, I'd just order a 30, but a 40 can get a bit thin after wear and if the down shifts so the extra ounce can keep everything where it needs to be. This is just my crackpot theory and worth exactly what you're paying for it!

Agree with above posts for the same reasons, I went with +1oz of 950 for my last 20° quilt and wish I had done the same with my under quilt just for that little extra peace of mind

I'll 4th what has been stated in the previous posts.

The next bit is copy and pasted from another thread here, just to add some more detail. It's an elaboration on a different but related question in the thread below.

    https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...-multi-purpose

I am of the opinion that overstuff doesn't make a 30° quilt into a 25° quilt. Overstuff won't change the maximum loft of the quilt, which is limited by the fabric shells and mesh baffles that make up its construction. Assuming a quilt is fully lofted and doesn't have empty spots, cramming more down in won't likely make it any better at retaining your body heat. It does provide insurance against loss of down performance in the field, for example if the down loses loft from taking on moisture over the course of a multi day trip. Having more down overstuffed in there will keep the quilt fully lofted that much longer as the down starts to lose its optimum performance until it's dried out or laundered. It also gives you more to play with for intentional down migration.

But to some extent, whether the above holds true depends on how generous a particular vendor is with the down in the first place. Overstuff would be more valuable if the quilt maker was skimping on down in the first place - but then it wouldn't really be overstuff, would it? All the vendors that are popular around here are pretty well known for being generous with the down they use in their products.

I should also mention that I have a 40° Premium Phoenix with 950 +1oz. So my vote would also be yes.

I have the standard 40 phoenix.
I was in a conundrum about overstuff them but reading here I decided to order them like they come. Then I was thinking that I could have asked for an extra ounce or two.
My question is: most of people advice to overstuff them. Why do the cottage vendors do not add an ounce or two as a standard and if someone wants to still overstuff them ask to do it.

Good question. I'm not sure who, but I know at least one vendor used to say they overfilled by 20% or something. I guess they still do. The only answer I can tell you is that it's just the human nature of "if this is good, then one more will be better!" or maybe "...."but these go to eleven"!

I believe pretty much every vendor includes a certain % of overfill as standard. The amount of overfill definitely varies by vendor, however.

I just decided to go with 40*, 20* and 0* quilts, no overstuff. Overstuff seems like something you would do if you're trying to get away with one or two quilt sets and stretching them to cover other scenarios.
