    Tarp pull outs

I find myself in need of a new tarp and I'm considering the Thunderfly from Warbonnet Outdoors. Should I get the tarp pull outs? I'm lazy and don't know how often I'd guy them out and wether or not they're more trouble than they are worth.

So, pull outs, yea or nay?

    Thanks.

I have the Thunderfly with the pullouts. I use them every now and then (using my trekking poles), but only when it rains. It does open up the tarp, but honestly I prefer porch mode. If I didn't have the pullouts, it wouldn't bother me.

I don't use trekking poles, so I doubt I'd use porch mode very often. Thanks for the reply.

The only time that I really use them is if it is raining all day and I am stuck under the tarp - it's nice to have that extra space. Although, in this case I usually just lift one wall in porch mode for lots of space so I often don't use the sides. So, at least so far I have found them nice but not necessary. I generally use sticks for porch mode btw, not my poles.

In high wind I would think that they would come in handy in order to prevent the middle of the tarp from blowing inward, but you could probably lessen that in other ways.

In the end, I am often too lazy to bother with the sides. I like the lines attached to the tarp for quick setup, add 4 stakes, and I'm done.

I have used the panel pulls on my Superfly a number of times in the Boundary Waters in big storms. Panel pulls are priceless when it's windy and raining sideways, as they keep the fly off of my hammock.

I have panel pulls but never use them. A fellow HF member once read a post where I said I had never even tried the panel pulls. He quickly pulled up a photo from eight years ago showing me using the panel pulls. So I guess I did try them but I don't remember it.

I use panel pulls on my tarps quite frequently. If in doubt, it's far better to get them and discover you don't need them than the other way around.

^+1. Get ‘me. I enjoy a simple set up, too, but there are times you’ll definitely wish you had them.

Nice to have if you need them.
Eventually you will need them if you camp enough.

I got them with my HG Palace. Didn’t use them when I experimented 3 or 4 times in the backyard. I was thinking they were maybe overkill.

Last weekend on a trip, the wind kicked up in the middle of the night and there was lots of moisture, not really raining, but like we were in an actual cloud, at maybe 5100 feet. When I got up, I noticed my head getting wet from hitting the inside of the wet tarp. I ran out the tie-out guys by headlamp, and it made the inside significantly more roomy for the rest of the night. What Shug said: when you need them, they’re handy.
