    Baffle Shapes

Has anybody experimented with baffle shapes? I see three main styles; Karo step, straight, and then George's Chevron baffles.

Are there pros and cons? I think I heard somewhere that Karo steps aren't great for underquilts but do work well for top quilts.

I'd also add Warbonnet's diamondback baffle to the list. Similar to straight baffles, but probably helps control down shift a little better.

I think the karo step is best for maximizing loft and keeping weight as low as possible. But as you mentioned, it causes a lot more shifting of the down than the other styles. You could combat this by using a significant amount of overfill, but then the weight savings benefit would go right out the window.

The chevron baffles used by George are great. Back when I had a Carolina Reaper, that quilt had zero down shift that I could perceive. Those quilts also use a lot more down than his other models, so that would also add to their superior ability to keep the down in place.

I'm sure we all know and have straight baffle quilts. I've not had any issues with mine. But again, a lot of that comes down to how much down the vendor chooses to use in their quilts. There's a pretty large variance between them.

I'd be curious to see what other baffle styles are possible or have been tried.

A differential cut makes the inside circumference smaller than the outside by cutting the inner fabric smaller than the outer. By the way, I'm completely happy with the Diamondback baffles on my 20° quilt.

Like RS said ... the thread presenting the Catsplat quilt fill calculator, later modded (Boston/Gadget) to include differential baffle and take into account the outside "puff" ... this thread is a good read and pretty easy to find.

I realize it looks like a thread on the calculator SS, but there is a lot of posts detailing the "why" and baffle design thoughts.
