Like many others, I just roll up the lines with the tarp and pull the snake skin over the whole shebang. My stakes go in a separate pouch.

What's made life easier for me is multi-colored guy lines - either two colors (one side or one end is distinct from the other), or a freakin' rainbow. If they get tangled, it's much easier to see and separate, and since you can see, they're less likely to get tangled in the first place.

I used to keep the lines separate and connect to tarp via Figure-9’s that were on split rings. But I didn’t like all that hardware on the squished up tarp. Now the guy lines are permanently attached to the tarp and adjusted at the stake. But I don’t really like that either. I think I may try line loc (not the triangle shape - the “other” kind) that hooks (i.e. removable) to the the tarp guy points.

Tough call - keep the lines separate with the risk of leaving them at home (I’ve read about that). Or keep them on the tarp and deal with the wrangling at put-up/take-down times. Separate lines can be used with multiple tarps rather than having a set attached to each tarp … decisions, decisions.

I just leave the guylines on the tarp and roll the tarp up. I've never had any tangling with Zing-It.

I keep lines permanently on the tarp, pre-tied with an adjustable sliding knot loop. Setup is easy: just slide the loop over the stake. Never had any problem with tangles.

Dutch cord is 1.3mm and reflective (as is Zpacks z-line) and is a lot stiffer and doesn't tangle as easily in my opinion. The long term durability is still somewhat of a question to me. They also won't work with Line Lock 3s, but work well with the Line Lock V (available from Dutch or Zpacks), the Slide Lock the Dutch sells, or knots of course.

This just blew my mind. Thank you for the reason to buy different cordage colors!

I looked at Dutch’s card which shows how to rig the fly’s, and I just assumed the preferred method was to remove each guy line each time. That (mistaken) idea did conflict with any normal tent where we just roll the guys up with the tent. I was using 1.8 mm reflect it, but the lines were tangling fairly often, so I switched them out out to zing it last week to have stiffer cord that would maybe tangle less. Sunday afternoon when I broke it down, it seemed like a lot of extra work to separate the “guys from the flyz’s” and then coil up each separate guy line. I believe I can handle it from here.

Thank you cmoulder for your response!

    cmoulder, who sells Lawson’s glowire?
    LOL no worries!

As is the case with just about everybody who backpacks/hammocks, I came from a tent/tarp-bivy background as well and it took me a good while to sort through the myriad options for suspension and tarps and re-combine it with stuff I already knew.

It's ironic that the path to simplicity was rather complicated.

I use Nite ize figure 9 tent cord because they are fast and the cord is reflective. I coil them up in a figure 8 wrap and just stuff them into the snakeskins with the tarp. I store my continuous ridgeline separately in my suspension bag with the stakes and straps,
