Help- My city is trying to pass a policy banning hammocks from city parks

    Hi,

I am a new member, and long time reader of the forums.

I have recently learned that the City of Winter Park-, FL - Parks and Recreation Department is working on banning hammocks in their parks. Does anyone have any advice on how we can prevent this regulation? I am a responsible hanger with straps, outdoor enthusiast, and a paying citizen of the town. I am ok with requiring tree straps but I'm not in favor of banning all hammocks. I have been in touch with them, and I'm trying to prevent the new regulation to ban hammocks. Please let me know if anyone else wants to organize to prevent this over-reaching regulation.

    Please advise!

    Thanks!

The counter to ignorance is education. You should first find out why they want to ban hammocks, so you can muster the appropriate arguments. You could propose educating bad actors instead of an outright ban. It will go a long way with the city council (or whomever) if you, personally, volunteer in some capacity.

+1 on finding out why they want to ban hammocks. It could have nothing to do with the hammocks themselves, and everything to do with the people associated with them. Just sayin.

Thanks for the replies! I spoke with the city, and they don’t want to damage the trees, they don’t want people leaving hammocks unattended during events, and they don’t want liability of someone falling out and injuring themselves, especially if they have a high hang.

It sounds like a proposal to install hammock poles into the ground may be the next step. They can always put up signs to protect themselves from legal ramifications, or require folks to file an application for a permit to hang a hammock at the park- which could include a release of liability.

The damage/liability argument is extremely obtuse. You will need an attorney and expert paid testimony to inform/argue either one, either way.

Sure you can lobby for dedicated poles and signs declaring liability limits...but what if someone walks into or trips over the sign?

I’m pretty sure that the city is protected from lawsuits anyway. Let me know if anyone has any other tips. Cheers

Orange County parks have a restriction on attaching anything to trees. However the state parks explicitly allow hammocks:

Hammock use and any other associated lines may be attached to trees that are minimum of 12 inches in diameter measured at chest height and using a minimum of 1 inch wide flat web straps. Some parks may provide hammock posts instead of trees.

The problem with this are your tarp guy lines. I haven't had any issues, but this rule is pretty clear about the requirements.
