    Suggestions? Big tarp, not Dyneema

I'm looking for some ideas about using a bigger tarp. Usage would be for extra coverage over my hammock or providing more dry areas for cooking / hanging out and possibly use over a tent to provide for more vestibule/dry area around a tent. I find using the minimalist tarps make me feel trapped especially during rainy trips.

Not sure I want to pony up the $$ for a Dyneema one just yet.

Can you guys offer me some recommendations on your experiences with bigger tarps (e.g. Dutch's wide rectangle tarp)? How big before they get too unwieldy for backpacking? Too many tiedowns and stakes? Personal experiences are appreciated.

    Thanks!

I love the versatility of the warbonnet Superfly. I got one with the center pole mod and the center guy outs, and it is fantastic. it works well in fair weather , and it's a blessing to have when you get a good storm. It pitches well with just 4 stakes. If the wind's blowing, the extra center guy outs help to keep the tarp stable. I rarely use the pole mod, but it's great to have for the rare time I do any car camping.

sure it's more than twice the weight, but it packs down much better which is sometimes more important - especially on colder weather trips.

It pitches well with just 4 stakes in calm weather. If the wind's blowing, or I'm expecting rain, I'll bring 6 stakes. The extra center guy outs help to keep the tarp stable. The Warbonnet Superfly is pretty much the do-it-all for me. I upped my game to a 12'Simply Light Winter Haven (extra wide) with 3 poles as my "winter" tarp, but only because I use a toboggan most of the time. I would never take it backpacking, even without the poles, due to the weight and bulk. But many people do.

Trailheadz makes a tarp with with an extended porch that I would love to have for car camping.

John shows the Monster Tarp in this video at 23:05.

That's a great pic, and good comments about weight.

As a cheaper option with LOTS of coverage, you could check out the Kelty Noah's tarps. A bit big for backpacking, but handy for car camping, especially with some tarp poles.
