I like my kelty 16, it's a little big, so I usually strap it on the outside of my backpack. I'd think the 12 wouldn't be too bad for most people, but I dont mind carrying a little extra to stand up under it, with walls all the way to the ground.

For non-hammock specific tarps I like the Aququest line from Oregon. The Guide series is lighter Sil-nylon and they come in a variety of sized from 10'x7' all the way up to 20'x13' The 10'x13' weighs only 1.7 lbs. at a price point of $119.00. I have the heavy weight defender tarp for my Canadian Canoe Trips. Great coverage and protection from the elements.

Another option is to get a secondary smaller tarp to provide extra room on inclement trips. Then, you can choose to take or not take based on weather. And also you have the option to set up this shelter away from the hammock. For this application I like my 10x10 3F UL Gear tarp with 18 hang points. It allows for multiple configurations. Not the lightest. But I like the square cut for this application over the Cat cut of the Kelty. But that is just me.

I ended up getting nothing. Funding was the primary issue. I'll work with what I have for now (smaller tarp). My hiking partner doesn't worry about weight, so he carries a big blue tarp if we think we need the extended coverage for bad storms.

EDIT - I'm saving all suggestions for future use, thanks!

Keep an eye on the vendors for their big sales. You missed out on Black Friday/Christmas/New Year, but I think most will have Memorial Day or July 4th sales.

Still, you can't go wrong with Big Blue. I've done plenty of nights with a tarp like that, rolled up and strapped to the outside of my pack.

PahaQue double is a good log tarp @ about $35. I don't care for the dasie chains so I cut them off & suspend with a continuous ridgeline. Pro Venture is another decent one.

    Robens 4x4 meter tarp.

    75D polyester 189T,
    Ripstop, Fire retardent, 100% polyester
5000 mm Hydrostatic Head for waterproof

I have had mine for four years. No stretch, or sag. Will be purchasing another is a few months for additional coverage of Amod Draumr in an Aluminum Military tripod hammock stand.

A short video of the smaller 3x3 meter.

Joe_gullbeau - welcome to the forum. I wish we had an adequate Army Surplus store in Bend that might carry the aluminum or fiberglass mast material to make a turtle dog (tripod) stand.

davem835 - because the Noah 16 was primarily designed as a diamond shape tarp, did you do anything to reinforce the connections where you string it up as a rectangular tarp?
In order to see what few have seen, you must go where few have gone. And DO what few have done.
