There are more than a few folks who make good use of asym tarps, and yes it's my opinion optimal results require extra skill and dedication. In fair weather they are a joy and offer plenty of views and air.

I had used it as part of a UL setup with a SLS and it didn't work well. Can't say whether a larger size would help coverage, it might be worse since the longer ridge limits how low you can pitch and this is especially critical in an SLS setup.
Yes, my pack weighs 70lbs, but it's all light weight gear....

I currently only have the Alpkit tarp at 2.7m x 2.4m which is the one in the photo. I'm looking at designing/making the 3.5m x 3m one as the Alpkit one won't offer enough coverage in poorer weather. So:

2.7m tarp in rectangular mode with smaller hammock
2.7m tarp in diamond mode with larger hammock
3.5m tarp in rectangular/hex mode with larger hammock (yet to be built)

    Hope that's clearer.
Oops. Yes, misreading indeed. That makes a lot more sense - cheers Is the 2.7*2.4m tarp wide enough when set up in rectangular mode over the smaller hammock?

Pretty much, could do with being a bit wider but it's usable.

I'm just sketching out a 3.5m x 3.2m tarp that I'd like to handle both hammock and ground. In hammock "mode" it could be either rectangular, Hex or Winter depending on conditions.

The sides will have three extra tie-outs at the mid-point and then one each at around the 1/4 & 3/4 mark. If I go at exactly the 1/4 mark then I can have doors which are 880mm along the base so 1760mm in total. Looking in TUH the design for a winter tarp has the door bases at 1100mm so 2.2m in total, roughly 450mm or 18" greater. If I put the quarter mark tie-outs at 1m from each end that gets me 2m in width but the bottom edge of the Hex would only be 1.75m long. Overthinking it and should just go for the quarter marks at 1m?

Each of the three tie-outs would have pole mod pockets plus there'd be some form of pole retention to stop them sliding around. There'd also be some mid-panel lifters for ground mode.
