Show me your “go to ground” setup!

I’m trying to make my setup a little more versatile, so I was wondering if anyone has done anything they’re fond of in terms of a ground setup. I don’t mean like the way Shug does it in his video, which is great but maybe what you’d do in a pinch. I mean any other ways that you might have gone out using your hammock fly with the intent to ground sleep, and maybe any mods to the tarp you might have added to get a bug net/tent setup below, something like “the ray way”. Thanks!

My go-to-ground setup is hiking out, getting something tasty to eat and driving home.

Please keep this on topic of hammocks and how you use them for going to ground. Otherwise this thread will get moved to the donating member area which is not the OP intent.

    Thank you.

In that case I'd do it just as Shug does in his GtG video with a hammock. If I knew that GtG was a certainty, the only extra things I'd carry are my 10.4oz 47" x 25" air mat and 1.6oz pillow. And maybe a 2oz 4'x8' section of polycryo as a ground sheet.

The hammock itself is your bug bivy if it has an integrated net, otherwise a Fronkey style is it. At the very least, a simple head net can be a real life saver.

If you thought going to ground may occur on a trip and you may carry a pad, something like Amok Draumr or Haven Tent sould do ya' right.

At a minimum, I think it would be pretty easy to use your hammock tarp as a ground tarp in a pinch. The last time I used my hammock as a ground setup was back in the early 2000's before I discovered underquilts & the temps were so low my 1/8" CCF pad alone wasn't cutting it. It was almost a fail only because my hammock was a Hennessy with bottom entry, which made entry/exit difficult but otherwise it pretty much worked.

These days if I'm going to the ground it's due to one too many drams of scotch.

I carry a Thermarest Zlite cut down to 6 panels (torso length for me) that i can use in a pinch. My tarp is the WB Superfly that can be set up in many configurations. Although ive never had to go to the ground, I feel it would be no big deal at all with these two pieces of gear. The ZLite is also my sit pad, ground pad for standing on outside my hammock, and if its really cold i can put it under any cold spots in my hammock for extra insulation.

I was kinda specifically looking to avoid bringing the hammock on a trip like this where IÂ’d certainly be on the ground. A setup with more open space would be ideal. I have 12ft of tarp to work with, so if I can avoid the cramped quarters of the hammock, that would be the goal. Also, I have my whoopies atrached directly to the hammock, so I’d probably at least need to reconfigure that to accomodate becket hitches to straps on a shorter distance, like between two hiking poles.
