This is something that surprised me having been out of back packing for 10-15+ years. Back then, stuff was just heavier. Now, everyone seems to sweat the details over 16oz like we're considering committing adultery. I replaced my 7-8 pound pack this year - just the pack! We didn't think twice about heading off on a multi-day hiking trip with 40 pounds. Then again, going out for more than 3 days is rare for me.

Anyhow, I've been wondering if all this concern is worth it. My pack fully loaded now comes in at 20 pounds. I can carry that all day, the extra 16 oz for my silnylon versus dyneema just isn't worth worrying about for me. I think I would get much more enjoyment out of more insulation tuned to the weather (and may just save a pound there as well - see how I obsess over it! ).

yup, it's true. and, you know what: i don't miss that at all . the affordable lightweight stuff available today is amazing and i'm glad for it. hiking with lighter load, especially when you have heavy gear which is "non-essential" to add to it (like camera gear, tripod etc) is a wonderful thing, not only more confortable, but often safer too. i just don't obsess over it, and i don't like "stupid light" solutions that are either too focused on one purpose only (so not light at all in the end, as they are unsuitable for multi-duty), or so light they are borderline unsuitable for the job (like very thin cordage, which is unusable in many situations just because it can't be handled, even if it is strong enough).

I put mine in a snakeskin and then in a small stuff sack.

I have a dcf stuffsack that the tarp came with (Zpacks with doors); fits in that just fine even with skins on, then into an outside pack pocket wet or dry.

I keep mine in snakeskins neatly organised in a double ended stuff sack. The weight penalty is small, but I have never had any lines tangled and it deploys easily.

I also use a mesh snake skin. I repurposed a Sawyer mesh bag for hanging the dirty water bag and put the tarp in it to keep it together and then put it in my mesh front pocket of the pack.

If dry my snake skinned tarp goes top of my pack inside the pack line to stay dry. But I don’t have a separate additonal stuff sack for it.

If wet it goes outside the pack liner, but also at top of pack.

Its often the first thing up and last thing taken down, especially if raining.
