Help needed for my first hammock

    Hi All,

I recently made an underquilt for a forum buddy. He showed me some photos of his hammocking trips and that got me thinking on trying it out myself 😊

I could use some help on this. There are so many diy guides that I can't decide what to do.
I'm 6'5 so I was thinking on a 11ft hammock, does that make sense?
I want it to be as light as possible. But comfortable, as I am an active side/stomach sleeper.

Some things I was thinking about is
    Zippered bugnet
Ridge line pocket and/or Side pocket

I have absolutely no idea what a good/lightweight rigging I need. So some tips on that maybe too 🙄
    Apologies for the newbie questions...

Any tips are extremely welcome! Thanks in advance!!

11' foot is a good length.
I have a whole suspension playlist for some insight....https://www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...RN4_MaZ8UAyzWm
There are a lot of suspension choices these days.

Enjoy the hammock quest and be patient.

I did an 11'r with zippered removable bug net.

Maybe there is something in here you can use..

    Hi,

Yes there are a lot. But made it more difficult for me to decide on something
This exactly the info I wanted. Some on the rigging and a pattern for the hammock. It looks beautiful! I'm gonna read and study you're thread thanks!

My thoughts are that you might want to make your first hammock without an integrated bug net. If you decide you don't like the bugnet or don't always want the bugnet, you'll be stuck with it. A separate bugnet can be left at home when you're camping during non-buggy times of the year; also, the bugnet zipper will add quite a bit of weight to your hammock. [Though I realize of course that an integrated bugnet overall weighs less than a separate bugnet.]

I really enjoy laying in my hammock without the bugnet, and again, if it's integrated, it's always there. You might want to see how you feel about it before you sew something that you'll decide you don't really like.

As for your other thoughts: Ridgeline storage pockets/pouches are super useful -- necessary, in fact, IMO. I don't like side pockets or pouches on my hammocks because if you put any weight in them at all, they pull the side of the hammock down.

I think generally once you get bit by the DIY hammock bug, you'll make more than one hammock any way, and you'll think of tons of sewing projects to keep yourself busy!
I have sewn my own: Backpack, hammock, bugnet, tarp, "Costco" top quilt with faux baffles, and Costco underquilt with "clew" suspension.

    Good point!

Yes the myog bug bit me a while back. Since I've made 5 backpacks 2 tents 3 quilts..... And the 6th backpack is under the sewing machine now.
I'm always planning a next build. And selling off some previous one
