    Car Camping in GA

    Hello everyone.

I'm looking for a decent place to go primitive "car camping" in GA. I normally would go to Black Balsam Knob, John Rock, Linville Gorge, or Burrells Ford for these trips, but due to the pandemic, I am required to stay within GA state borders. Typically, my group prefers a very short (10-100 yard) hike to reach the sites. Primitive or backpacking sites are fine, but tables would be fine too.

Do you guys have any recommendations?

P.S. I highly recommend Black Balsam Knob to anyone looking for the same thing in NC. There are excellent hiking options and fantastic views!
"The Road goes ever on and on,
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can.
    Pursuing it with eager feet
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say."

Have you tried the Bartram Trail in Clayton GA? It’s not a loop but you can do out and back or have a pick up point depending on what you want to do.
Also, I recommend getting the All Trails app. It’s great for finding hiking/backpacking trails and you can record your trip with it.

Dockery Lake close to Suches, GA. It is perfect! They have tables, a flushing toilet, and no hiking in. The last time we were there the water was turned off to the faucets so you might want to bring some but the toilets were good, no showers.

And if you feel adventurous, you can take a walk around the lake or hike up to Preacher's Rock. Be prepared for the drive in, it's a long drive up a one way gravel road but it's not too rough. I've seen lots of low profile cars go in without a problem. And it is BEAUTIFUL this time of the year! And if you want to hike in some you can use the Dockery Lake trail on the backside of the lake. I've seen people do some primitive camping along that trail but it would require about a 2 mile hike in. The trail is beautiful though.

    There's magic in the woods,

If you are potentially doing a Georgia Sate Park, try Fort Yargo. They have nice, short walk-in sites. ANd reasonably close to Conyers.

Check out Chattahoochee NF website for many camping areas with information on closing dates and facilities. Raven Cliffs on the Richard Russell has primitive camping with a parking lot at the trail head and nearby woods where campers can pick two trees.

Vogel allows hammocks but with leaf lookers may be full.

You did not say how many in your group. If too many may be confined to group camping area.

Take 60 from Cleveland to Morganton, and the AT will cross 60 past Suches.
The AT also crosses the Richard Russell Highway between Helen and Blairsville.
The AT also crosses 76 between Hiawassee and Clayton.
Go down the AT as near to the highway as you wish.
At the top of the mountain between Helen and Hiawassee, you can access a USFS dirt road and camp off it.
All the above is USFS and you don’t need nobody’s permission/reservations.
Ravens Cliff is off the Richard Russell, also, as Biker Bob already mentioned, if a developed area is more suitable.
