I have a tarp from DD. That is quite dark. Will provide a decent shape.

Oh this!!! Nothing like waking up at 5 am because the sun is out and blinds you. First experience with this in a bad way was my DCF tarp. Argh.. it was sold shortly thereafter.

I have the same problem. I have to cover my eyes in some fashion or I'm awake when the sun comes up. Historically I just pull my down beanie over my eyes. I've also tried my buff, but it is too translucent. I will bring an eye mask if I really want to sleep in and then can get 10-11 hours of sleep, unheard of at home.

I do have a thick DCF camo fabric on my tent, but it doesn't block well enough and the light sneaks in on all my tarps. I can't imagine any tarp fixing this issue for me.

Listen here bud, I don't come to a forum for a small subgroup of a small hobby like ultralight camping to get reasonable and cheap ideas to solve my problems. I can't buy a high fill goose down dyneema cuban fiber bandana with spyder straps and Dutch buckles for $179.99 So I'm gonna have to ask you to go back to the drawing board.

Just a quick look at this archaic shelter system from the early 20th century: Waxed canvas weighs 18 oz. per square yard? So a 12 x 12 tarp weighs 72 ounces? My math ain't that good but it sounds like a beast of a tarp to carry from the car to 10 feet away! Four and a half pounds of tarp, just so you can sleep in an extra hour or two.

There's ultralight, and there's ultra heavy. Waxed canvas sounds like it's cornered the market on ultra heavy!

And like all good sarcasm, there's a grain of truth in it.

Since the average buff is nearly 20 in long, I find it easy to just double or even triple it up. They're so light and stretchy that it is still totally comfortable

It is said that a darker tarp makes some people feel like it's gloomy outside. My wife and I use Winter Haven Tarps from Simply Light Designs. Hers is moraccan blue and mine is coyote brown. She likes the blue glow while I Prefer the lower sunlight on a bright day when napping. We use a 20D Silpoly XL material and like it. My buddy tried out his DCF (green) tarp last trip and reported that he felt like he had slept in a greenhouse. Dark olive is a nice color for keeping sunlight out also.

Here is a good example of coyote brown on a bright day

That looks very nice. Also if I didn't dig the gloom I wouldn't live in the PNW. Greenhouse is exactly how I would describe some of the DCF materials I've seen.
