    Down in a baffel

Is there a way to calculate how many oz of down there needs to be in each baffle for a 30 degree underquilt?

I'd look at what the pro's do and start breaking it down from there. Hammock Gear has spec sheets for their quilts - here's the one for a premium phoenix. This down is distributed amongst, "9 differential baffles that run the length of the quilt," according to their website, so you can run some math there to get in the ballpark.

I have no experience making any gear like this, but this is what I'd do if I wanted to get started.

Can' help with that question but have always gone by baffle height.
A 30º quilt would need about 2" loft.

So if I am reading that right looking at almost 7 oz for a 30 degree over 9 baffels with almost 12 oz total weight?

Looks like it, but you need to account for differences in length and width if you have other dimensions in mind. If you target that 2" baffle height a la Shug's graphic and the HG specs and get everything else right you'll be good, but I've heard working with down is a serious chore.

It's also worth a mention that sewn-through baffles are supposed to be less efficient because they create cold spots - I believe a process to avoid this is called "karo step" but I'm out of my element here.
