First DIY Hammock, what do you guys think of this plan

    HI!

So this is my first DIY hammock. I purchased 1.2oz MTN XL from RSBTR. I'm going to keep it as wide as possible, probably around 64" and make it 10' in length (I'm 5'9")
I plan on just stringing a continuous loop through each end channel and use a larks head. I'm going to use an adjustable ridge line, till I can dial it in.
I'm going for lightweight, and comfort. I know, normally you can't use those two words in the same sentence.

For suspension I'm just going with a lightweight strap, and becket hitch.
I did purchase a bottom entry bug net (5.4oz).

All of this together should weigh less then my zippered bug net hammock.

What do you guys think of the hammock construction? That's my main concern. Just don't want to do something wrong that will end up with me wasting my time and money.

I think you'll be more comfortable with a longer hammock. Most of us feel 11 feet is about the minimum. The gathered end I made is 12 feet and I'm only 3 inches taller than you.

How much fabric did you buy? I assume 4 yards as RSBTR sells this in even yard divisions. Why not sew it at 12' less your edge seams and Channel... so ~11.5' or so. No cutting and if you really do not like the longer length then you can always cut it down. Actually you can whip the ends prior to any channel sewing and try it out at various lengths before settling in on 10' , 11' or what ever. If you only purchased 3.5 yards, well I guess you have a 10' hammock.

I have an 11' hammock, that's 58" wide. It is comfy, but I can't get a good diagonal lay in it. This has a fixed RL as well. I also have a 10' that 60" wide and I feel more comfortable in that. It's currently only the cost of the martials, which was not that expensive. So, if I make this one and it's not all I think it is, I'll go longer.

Yes, I did purchase 4 yards. Since this is my first go around at the DIY, I'm sure I'll do some experimenting. Thank you for the suggestions, I wasn't thinking about starting long and cutting down as needed. My thoughts were that a 10' hammock will weigh less then a 11' hammock. Plus going with the 4 feet more then your height rule, I figured 9'9" ~10' would do it.

Thanks! I hope so, as long as I don't end up on my a$$. Is running continuous loops through the end channels ok to do? Using a larks head to gather them up. Then throw the RL over those.

You could do a no sew hammock and try it at 10' and 11' and test hang in your yard. It sucks to cut it then come to the realization that you would prefer a larger size! https://duckduckgo.com/?q=no+sew+ham...%3DAJlEQpcbM1I

    Two things:

    Lightweight and comfort are fine.
Lightweight, comfort and cheap is the hard part.

Re length, why don’t you prepare one end of the hammock as normal then tie off the other end at 11’ and try it, then 10.5’, then 10 etc
Once you’ve found your “happy place” make the hammock to that length.

Oops - basically what TreeBeard said!
