I picked up one of these on forum too and it is hard to get used to. I found that to get best coverage I have to overlap suspension and tarp tie outs...hang it low. Once weight of your body is in hammock it “drops” the hammock below the tarp line-so minimal rubbing etc. I watched a video of shug doing this and it made sense to me. Also don’t underestimate hanging in the best direction for avoiding wind as well as observing surroundings for best natural protections...tree canopy etc.

This tarp is a UL backpacking dream. Though I will definitely be purchasing a palace too. A taste of the good life makes me want to the big poppa.

I used my HG DCF Hex over the weekend. That's pretty much the key for the most coverage, hang low to the hammock SRL. Ample coverage especially with the pull outs. You just aren't going to sit under it and cook dinner. You'll need to porch out one side for that. I'm able to run a 10' Asym hammock under an 11' tarp. Very nice end coverage. I can drape my rain jacket over either end if necessary and it hangs well under the tarp, out of the direct rain.

I don't seem to think there is an issue with coverage. Granted, I have not been in sideways rain with it, but I am well pleased with the coverage. 11' tarp over an 11' 8" hammock. Doing a week on the AT at the end of the month, so we shall see what weather the good Lord sends our way.

Awesome setup. The camo looks so good. I’m definitely rethinking the 12ft ridgeline, since the 11ft standard tarp with doors would be able to hang lower to the hammock. Too many choices!

    Lol.... It's Hyperlite Southwest 4400.

Overkill for backpacking but I also use it canoe camping in the Boundary Waters and tend to pack heavier on those trips.

I've looked into those a bit. Still contemplating a new pack. Are you bringing that this weekend?

FWIW, I just used a HMG 3400 on my long section hike, and I’m very happy with it except that I think my particular one might be a dud in terms of water resistance. Other hikers in the same storms claimed theirs were dry as a bone insode but my down got drenched. Shame on me for not just using a compactor bag, but I’m a little annoyed with HMG’s misleading verbiage about waterproofing and their constant sharing of user reviews that tend to favor claims of waterproofing. Hopefully they’ll replace mine and I can decide for sure if I love/hate it.

I'm sorry.. I couldn't resist. You've been 'contemplating' this for what... four or five years?
Yes, my pack weighs 70lbs, but it's all light weight gear....
