    Panel Pull Pole Question

I am going to order what I need to make some poles for my Superfly and I noticed most people used the metal end tips, is there some advantage to using metal over nylon for this application? The nylon tips are significantly cheaper, and lighter too I'd imagine, Is there any good reason to not use them?

I've been using the nylon ones for a few years now with no issues.

What do y'all use for attaching the pole tips to the panel pulls? Do you use adjustable or set length and if set, what length works best?

I haven't investigated panel pull poles for my Superfly yet. Where did you find materials to make the poles?

I am interested in the answer to these questions as well.

Some measurements need to be more exact than others but most are the “ish” kind. Like the length of the pole connecting cord is 6-ish inches. For pole material there are outlets like Questoutfitters and TentPoleTechnologies. There are also “sets” (for tents) you can buy on Amazon and cut down to size.

Warbonnet includes some small non-stretch cord with their pole set. It is also possible to use light bungee. If I were going to make lots of those connectors for different tarps, I’d make a small adjustable set. I’d use it to determine a desired length, then make a fixed line of that length. As I see it, there is no reason to use an adjustable line on something that is destined to be the same length all the time - just one more thing to get out if adjustment.

Because of the flex in the poles and tarp, for me, close is good enough. Long ago I bought some connectors from WildernessLogics (for the OMW). They are grommets on webbing. That allows me to move them from tarp to tarp and also to forget them and leave them at home. Now I just larks head an 8” (extra length of the connection) loop of light cord to the tarp and call it good. Works so far.

In order to see what few have seen, you must go where few have gone. And DO what few have done.

I got my pole pieces from https://www.questoutfitters.com/

I ordered 6 .344" aluminum poles in 18" lengths, 4 with inserts, 2 without, and 4 of their nylon tie-off grommet end tips. I also ordered 4 yards of 3/32" shock cord but you could easily do it with 3, I just wanted some extra for another small unrelated application.
