Do you folks use Sleeping bag liners under your top quilt?

After a day of hiking, do you get into a sleeping bag liner before pulling on your top quilt? Is there an alternative to keep the hammock and/or the top quilt from becoming greasy or dirty over time?

In particular, I was thinking of getting a lighter top quilt (i sleep hot, but I also live on the frozen tundra up north) and using a warmer liner to provide added warmth in the spring/fall. Does anyone have advice or tips in this regard?

Liners can be really annoying. Easier to carry a clean set of synthetic longjohns instead.

Never been a fan of liners. I carry a pair of long Johns just for sleeping and that keeps any dirt or perspiration off the sleep surfaces and of course serves as additional insulation. Same with socks: separate often lighter-weight pair just for sleeping. If long Johns are too warm for your climate, then take a look at a pair of scrubs from a uniform store.

I live and camp in GA where it's often warm in the summer. Unless I'm camping in a spot I know I can clean off by jumping in the lake/river/stream, I like to carry my thermasilk longjohns. Super lightweight and do a good job keeping grunge off the quilts.

Another one for using thermal top and long johns, in my case merino. They perform three roles: keeping your bag/quilt clean; adding to the general warmth whilst sleeping; you have something dry to get into when you get to camp.

It's worth noting that sleeping bag ratings assume you are wearing something like a thin thermal layer. The standard test, used to be EN-13537 but is now ISO-23537, mandates them.

I’m one for wearing some thermal underwear to bed in my hammock. I find it more comfortable than having the synthetics touching the skin, almost helps keeps things clean.

When the weather is warm I will wear the thermal underwear and not use a top quilt.

I do use a liner but only for the hot/humid summer months. Then I use it instead of a top quilt.

I use a fleece liner, but on the exterior of my top quilt mostly when I know the temps will be dipping close to TQ threshold.

I use a JacksRBetter Summer Quilt a lot when it is warm. I'm a cold sleeper and I'll toss it in the hammock most late Spring Summer nights. When I car camp, I will often use it as a liner with my Sierra Sniveller.

I have a couple liners that I use - for extra warmth with my sleeping bag that I'm using as a top quilt during the sub 40 temps. Or I'll use them during the summer instead of a sleeping bag. My main gripe that I have with the ones I have is that they don't open along the side. So I'm wiggling in/out, which becomes an issue when you wake up and need to answer the call of nature.
