They talk about how remote and inaccessible that location is, but I'm pretty sure I've seen 4-wheeler tracks going right up to the shelter, which is only 300-400 meters from that waypoint.

Well it's good training for a real emergency.

Yeah.. I didn't get it either. It's not far from the Equestrian Center. Mostly uphill, as is anything when leaving from the Equestrian center, but not two hours of inaccessible hiking.
Yes, my pack weighs 70lbs, but it's all light weight gear....

Ha, well maybe there's more to it than meets the eye. There's never any follow-up or 'after action' report on these things.

But hyping the danger and drama is the stock-in-trade for "news" people.

But I have seen some of those big rat snakes over the years... this one near Wildcat Shelter was about 6-7ft long... I laid down my trekking poles for scale:

Wow. And THAT is why I sleep in a hammock.

I was on the Timp Pass on a muggy day back in September, in that sort of swampy valley near the Herbert Mine, and alarmed a LARGE rattler. He gave me a nice berth, though, started going berserk with his rattle when I was 15 feet away. So, I thanked him for that and turned around. I think they like that area, there are a lot of rocks and small caves and crevasses for them to hide in. I tend to reliably see garter snakes in warm weather.

LOL yeah the whole park is a natural haven for snakes.

Glad you mentioned Timp... an amazing locale and I haven't camped there in quite a while... hmmmm.

Just went searching for pics of my last trip to the Timp. Love that spot. Can't find the pics though.
Sweet payoff after a challenge hike. And a beautiful view at night. Though last time we were there overnight it was wicked cold.

This weekend's sub 24 overnight took advantage of unseasonably warm weather. Left work around 1:30p, drove up to Harriman only to find that the Diltzes Lane trail head parking is being used to expand the local power substation and there didn't seem to be legit on-road parking. Disappointed because I wanted to hike a loop up to Breakneck but, undaunted, I just moved down the road to the equestrian center and hiked a version of my last installment. On the trail around 3p.

Nice to see water flowing again

First trip with the new pack. Such an improvement over what I had been using.

To celebrate the new, lighter pack, I loaded it with my Reagan-Era 20 degree North Face Polar Guard bag (because I've been dragging my feet ordering a 20 degree TQ) 60 ounces of bloated warmth for a night that dipped to 46 degrees.

One of the best night's sleep yet! Back home by 10:30am for domestic duties.

    Observations:
Saw three sets of abandoned underwear. Bottoms. On the trail, not at a campsite. What's up with that?
Fall is over. 1000% of the leaves are on the ground making for a sometimes slippery walk

First trip carrying an inReach. We practiced as a family the day before: Here's what the messages mean. Don't reply because it costs money! Here's the park police number just in case etc, etc. Five pm sharp the device rings for an incoming message asking if I was in the backyard!!!

Nice shakedown for your new pack!

    Crazy mild this weekend.

I did an easy, late-day pop into Brien Shelter area Tue-Wed.

Very droll and dreary overall so not much inspiration to take pics, but just as I was nearing the parking lot the morning sun poked thru briefly and lit up what little color was left.

But mostly it was like this
