I rolled into the lot around 9am and it was only about 20 degrees. NOAA had it at 5 degrees at 6:45. I was going to hike up to Stockbridge to say ‘hello’ but there was a column of hikers ahead of me that reminded me of the famous crowds on the Hillary Step on Everest so I turned around and went toward Brien Shelter. I haven’t camped in the snow, so I used the morning to practice and I’m glad I did. My first attempt at pitching my new tarp resulted in it being upside down ( tie outs on the inside). On the second attempt something didn’t look right and I realized I put 2 of the grounds lines on the wrong pull-outs. Glad I did this at a leisurely pace during the day rather than at sunset after a long hike. I need to work on centering the ridge line. I’m used to Linelocs and I’ve let my knot/ hitching skills deteriorate.

    ‘twas a crisp beautiful day.

Good day to get out and practice!

Jstaines and I were treated to some great winter conditions... a little chilly, but it was good to get a nice dose of acclimatization for the (hopefully) cold weather and snow to come this season.

We hiked the short distance up to Stockbridge and made our camp there and jstaines played around with his hot-tent setup, and it was pretty cool to see smoke coming out the stovepipe. As I was setting up it dawned upon me that I hadn't brought the Palace but rather the hex with doors, although it turned out not to be too big of an error because the wind was very minimal. Grey skies that persisted as we hiked in gave way to beautiful blue skies as we settled into our camp. After we got things squared away we popped up to Stockbridge Shelter and found only footprints from what was probably a small group out for a day hike.

My Thermodrop indicated an overnight low of 12°F. We were up in time to make coffee and watch the sunrise, which is something I always enjoy when backpacking. I used the Jetboil for making water from snow, while jstaines heated water and melted snow very effectively on the top of his stove.

We hiked out this morning in time for jstaines to meet up with Jolly's FB hammock group and join them for another night out. I chatted with Jolly and some of the group members that I've camped with before, and then I went home and took my wife out for breakfast! Going snowshoeing tomorrow with a friend of mine who lives locally.

For anyone following this thread that hasn’t been to Harriman, whether for an overnight or just a walk in the woods: winter is pretty special. I’m not a huge fan of the rockiness of the lower NY State trails, but none of that matters in the snow! The woods are simply beautiful.

Grrr... Recently I've been tempted to haul out the Duomid and air mat and do an old-school groundling trip... okay, maybe not!
