Sorry 'bout the snakes, but you gotta admit this little fella is kinda cute!

With the upcoming weather, however, we won't be seeing any more snakes until May.

Man we need an all things harriman thread
So looking more and more like I can have off Thursday
So my plan is to drive up after work Thursday and do a few miles in and camp for the storm
    Few things
It looks pretty windy jet boil or alcohol stove...
Maybe just bring a sandwich, but hot chocolate is still nice
Never been to the silvermine area
Any recommendations for an area to spend the night...
Stockbridge or brien or something more sheltered maybe along the long path
Or maybe I will go to my side that I am extremely familiar with

Highly recommend snowshoes. The official prediction is for 12" plus and we're right in the middle of the zone so more toward the "+" side now. That's the forecast, however strong winds can whip up drifts that are much (much!) deeper.

In what area do you normally hike/camp? Maybe best to stick with something familiar... even then, it's going to look all different now. Other places that get plowed out *relatively* quickly (highly dependent upon conditions) are Ramapo Equestrian Center (gotta feed the horses!), Skannatati and Elk Pen (a bit lower priority, IIRC). Probably Tuxedo. Reeves Meadow quickly because it's a x-country ski super fave for city folk. Johnsontown Rd fairly quickly because local plow trucks for the residents make their turn-around at the circle. When it gets really snowy they don't even bother plowing Turkey Hill Scenic Area loop at all until spring.

Whenever there's adequate snow I take the Jetboil, which is my snow melting machine. Water, Water everywhere!

I normally hike the western side of the park
Shannatai should work fine for me
Dont have snow shoes yet but I'm keeping it close and packing for 2 days if needed....
    Love the snow......
I still need to get my copper strip for the jetboil.......always procrastinating until I need it today
It's now been 10 days since I have hiked in the snow, having withdrawls symptoms
I asked about the parking because a few years ago we had a storm like this so I made reservations at a NJ state campground
Me and my buddy got there early set up and went out to hike for the sunset
We arrived back at our campsite after dark, just as the storm got going, just planning on cooking dinner and settling in for the storm
    But
We see park police waiting at our site, guy says we need to pack up and leave parks closing
Are you kidding me, what a sh$# s$^& that was20201206_141639.jpg

I’m trying to pull off a free day on Friday.. looking to do Friday/Saturday. It’s going to be cold and likely deep snow. Nalgene, Down pants, gaiters, 0F quilts, Jetboil... likely to be one of my heavier loadouts. More concerned about getting to Harriman on Friday than anything else.

haha yea, I'm mostly concerned about getting back to Brooklyn on Thursday if I go tomorrow. I think the roads will be clear by Friday and may end up going then as well. Playing with a hot tent ;o)

    I hope it works.

Maybe a shout-out again to NY/NJ/LI peeps to make a small group of it? Current forecast says still snowing Thu morning so Fri is a safer bet.

Fun to be dragging out full winter kit!

Yea, have used it a couple times, still tweaking it/learning to not hate sleeping on the ground Would like to test it during a snow storm, but Friday being a cold night will also be fun.
