LOL if ever yer gunna play hooky, now is the time!!

I think it's getting too cool for rattlers' tastes... I didn't see any this year, in fact. I did intercept a couple of ticks crawling up my gaiters and socks, though.

    I hate rattlers.

When I was high school my best friend was nicknamed rattler. We hiked and camped all the time and whenever we came across a rattlesnake, Bill would swing into action and go about trying to sack it, hence the nickname. He caught many of them over the years, sometimes more than one on a single hike! It was always good to have Bill around. He always joked that unless you step on them, you’ve got no problems.

I was able to drag out a bunch of my friends over the summer and got them to day hike with me
June 24th I believe we had 2 rattler encounters
One just kept coming down the trail at us for what seemed like forever
We were to chicken to go off trail as we believed the rest of his family was lurking there
2 days later a lady was bitten on the same trial we were on and had to be airlifted out while dec officers kept a bear at bay during the rescue efforts
I nor them have been back since....
Not to mention they all had ticks on them
I as well as another used treated clothes and long sleeves and pants and we had zero ticks
    I hate ticks also
Hmm we were in the Russian bear area as well that trip

Well if it hadn't been for MikekiM spotting those rattlers—that I walked right past without even noticing!—a couple of years ago I wouldn't have had a rattlesnake sighting at all the last few years!

I think that young lady from NYC just got unlucky... probably sat down on a log for a break. I read it was on SBM trail near Stone Memorial shelter. No doubt, they're all over the park. They're reported from time to time at Brien shelter area and I've never seen one there.

But I just don't worry about 'em. I hike there quite frequently and wear shorts all the time, until it gets down to about 40°F or lower.

Only snake that puckered me up was the little guy in the photo below, an eastern hognose that coiled up and had his neck hood flared out. I had not seen a yellow/black color like that and didn't know what the heck he was. A friend researched it and found that it was "all bluster and no bite" but I didn't know that at the time.

Some reason, I always see snakes in Harriman.. All of them.
Island Pond.. I was wading in the water .. My feet.. Ankle deep.. And here comes a decent size snake in the water stopping and popping its head up staring at me.. I have the picture buried somewhere..
I have seen 2 rattlers on trail.
Probably 4 or 5 HUGE black rat snakes
And one time we got to West MT Shelter in a serious Thunder storm.. Set up our pads/quilts/gear.. Just as I layed back to relax I see something move on beam across top of shelter.. A tremendous snake was coiled along it up near top corner!! Kids freaked out.. And 2 other people in shelter needed extra toilet paper.. Lol. I really do not like staying in the shelters at all!!!

I've seen a bunch of Rattlers....

The one I mentioned, A HUGE Timber Rattler up on the Timp, another at a location I can't recall, but I did get a picture of it coiled up right in front of my steps, and another that was crossing the trail.. didn't get a pic of that one.

I have few here... Videos are worth a look... Especially the HUGE one on the Timp. Walked up on that one while it was crossing the rocks and was able to video it for a few minutes as it slowly wandered into and then out of the grass.

Lat / Lon in the lower corner of the vid. That was just SW of Stone Memorial Shelter, but it could have been anywhere in the park...

LOL starting to think I am just fat, dumb, happy and blind.

Safe to say I'm not packing my fears.

But I have seen some of those big rat snakes over the years... this one near Wildcat Shelter was about 6-7ft long... I laid down my trekking poles for scale:
