Not my thread but I figured I'd bump it to let y'alls know that I'm planning a quick overnighter tomorrow (Fri, Dec 11) with a quick out Sat morning if any LI/NY/NJ folks are interested in doing an easy hike-n-hang. I'm good with anything from 1.5 to 12 miles, starting as early as 7am or as late as noon. Route flexible... I'm pretty familiar with all of Harriman. Morning out hike is usually less than 1.5mi.

I was planning the same a quick loop from the Silvermine Lot....until someone dropped at 2:30pm meeting on me for Friday. Even if I bring my gear to work, I'll be running into the start of rush hour from LI and would likely arrive as the sun goes down.

I went Fri-Sat and it was fun, with kind of a hazy fog all day, temp getting up to about 55°F... crazy mild this late in the year. I didn't pass a single backpacker, only a couple of day hikers near Turkey Hill. Rather breezy in the evening, more than I expected, and of course it changed directions middle of the night. I rigged up my rain jacket on the foot end shock cords and made a surprisingly effective partial UQP.
The loop went from Silvermine to Brien, AT over Black Mtn, north on 1779 and then west to Turkey Hill and Long path back down to Stockbridge. Only 9.5mi and I just moseyed along in no particular rush.
What shocked me was seeing a little 3ft garter snake out hunting, near the shore of Turkey Hill Lake. He had a little lump in his mid-section, apparently having recently consumed a small rodent. I don't recall ever before seeing a snake out and active this late in the year!

Nice picture. And a nice route. I’m trying to rustle the family out the door for a day hike.
Dam You and your snakes
So with the incoming snow
I am looking to see if I can get off of work Thursday and do an over nighter
Any recommendations for a parking area with the foot of snow expected
I have a truck and gear so that's not a problem....

They always plough Silvermine before anything else, mainly because that's the location of one of the 24/7 bathrooms that park employees and rangers use, and because of the sledding hill there that is very popular.
Sorry 'bout the snakes, but you gotta admit this little fella is kinda cute!
With the upcoming weather, however, we won't be seeing any more snakes until May.
