First time out - cheapo setup

I am camping out with my hammock for the first time and this is what I've got for my setup. I had to stay VERY low on cost:

    - ENO Doublenest - w/ slap straps
    - REI Poly 8X10 tarp - http://www.rei.com/product/357011
    - homemade bugnet tube from lycra mesh or no-see-um (still on the works)
    - regular sleeping bag (insulation is not an issue this time of year)

The first plan is to use the tarp in a regular A-shape setup. But I may try setting it up on the diagonal as well. any arguments against doing this with a rectangular tarp?

Also, is 8X10 enough for coverage? or should I go with the 9x12 tarp?

I plan to test the setup before the real deal, I still have a couple of weeks before my trip.

That should be fine for a nice warm summer hanging trip. Enjoy your new hammock!

Setting the tarp up on the diagonal will give you much better views from the hammock and should provide plenty of protection. If you run into weather, just set it low and tight. I'd go with the larger tarp just for the sake of having a little more work room under it, but that's just me.

Have a blast and try everything that comes to mind. That's how some of the best ideas get generated.

You would be well served to always carry some kind of pad regardless of what time of year it is. You'd be surprised as to just how quickly you can get cold/chilled underneath. Around 65-70 degrees for most. Unless you have anti-freeze in your blood as a few here have.
