    I've done it both ways. I've never had issues with the handles down & being able to poke the tips through the tarp beastie rings, makes it super easy & secure. Did it that way for years during my ground tarp days with my fixed length poles.

    Have never needed to do it personally but my instinct would be to have pointy end down. Usually I just use a stick for those sorts of things.

    Handles up. Points stuck in the ground.

    Sweaty, salty handles are a dinner bell for the four leg'd critters. Plus, one good gust of wind could lift the tarp hardware off the point and deposit the tarp on the point.

    I use hollow carbon fiber shafts on my sticks and the handle has a hole in its' top as well. I twist a trail stick in the hole and loop the guy line around the stick. Sure some water could migrate into the shaft in a deluge, but it's carbon fiber and not too vulnerable to water damage, and.. one good shake will eject the water out the way it came in.
    Yes, my pack weighs 70lbs, but it's all light weight gear....
