    NC>Elk Knob State Park>Hammock-able?

    Hi,
A friend and I will be camping at Elk Knob State Park in a few weeks. He will be using a tent. I prefer to hammock. Does anyone know if the backcountry sites are suitable for hammocking? I'd also take advise on which backcountry/zone camping areas are better than others. Thanks in advance.

I hike up to the summit a few times a month but haven't ventured out to the back country sites. I'll try and hike that trail soon and report back if no one knows.

I haven’t been to the back country sites at Elk Knob, but if it’s like back country camp sites at other NC state parks then there are a couple of fine gravel tent pads surrounded by tree and plenty of good hammocking. Elk Knob State Park is heavily forested (except at the summit) so I think you’ll be good with any of the sites.

I have hiked out to those sites but not camped there - there are lots of trees for hanging a hammock.

Hiked down to campsite 3 tonight. Got a late start and ended up night hiking the last mile out. Site 3 was ok but not an ideal place for hammocks. Not impossible but not ideal. 887409B3-D8B8-4AD2-8A59-1ED72E2EC6F3.jpg

Thanks for the pictures, I think we would have been slackers and hit site 1 or 2. I really do appreciate all the help but it looks like Gamma may change our plans if the forecast rain plays out. Thanks again!

That is understandable. No fun to camp in a hurricane. I was going to hike all weekend as well and won’t be doing that.
