Hammocking with a Dog- Gear Suggestions

    Hello there!

I am looking to upgrade my current sleeping situation in the hammock (sleeping bag, potentially top quilt) but I am going to be getting a pup this winter. I want to ensure that my bag is able to withstand them sleeping in the hammock with me, I'm guessing on top of the bag to start?

What denier fabric would you suggest be tough enough for their nails? I currently have a 30 degree Kelty Calisto which seems tough enough, but I am looking to upgrade to a topquilt and some of them just seem so *delicate* at 20D, such as the Outdoor vitals pod, or topquilts.

I have looked into some dog sleeping bags as well, but until I have the dog & train it, I'm sure they'll end up migrating out of their bag, and also, getting in & out.

What breed/size dog are you planning to get?

My 7lb toy poodles sleep on, under, and in my 10D top quilt and WBBB without issue, but I imagine a larger dog would become problematic.

I have a 51 lb. beagle and he sleeps in the hammock with me. I don't have any problem with his nails so haven't sought out heavier fabrics.

My border collie sleeps on her own pad under the hammock/tarp or in an Alcott pup tent. Many nights she prefers to roll her own on the ground. Never in the hammock, and she likes it that way.

I will have a lagotto romagnolo (Italian water & truffle dog) which full size will be somewhere from 25-45 pounds, hopefully on the lighter end of that spectrum. I'm hoping with training & de-sensitization she will learn to appreciate sleeping in the hammock once potty trained. I plan on transitioning back to a double hammock at that point to ensure room & comfort levels as well.

Thanks OltrailDog. I have debated on this as well, since I usually sleep under a tarp, and I have a gear hammock that I could also transition with the correct kind of mat/bed situation

What denier insulation situation do you have going for you?

No idea. All my quilts are from Hammock Gear though. Their website says they use 10D.

I would add that my border collie's pad rolls around the interior of my back pack forming a soft "barrel" to load gear into. Inside the "barrel" I insert an unscented trash compactor bag for water protection, just in case.
