Labor Day weekend a buddy of mine and I went camping for 2 nights in the hidden gem of Rensselaer county called Pittstown State Forest. The forest is located about a 30 minute drive north northeast of Albany NY just of Rt7 going east out of Troy NY. With over 1000 acres, there's plenty of trails to hike or bike. Two main trails lead south out of the forest and connect to another trail system in Grafton Lakes State Park.
Generally you need a camping permit if you use one of the several drive up sites along the access road. As long as you're more than 150ft from a trail, road, or water source the local ranger will waive the permit requirement. My site was in the eastern section of the forest near a small stream. It was a good time and felt good to get away for what likely will be my last camping trip till spring of next year.
I took a couple of extra tools with me to field test. One was my kukri knife, the Whiskey Corvid designed by Creek Stewart made by Reptile Tool works. The other was my Buck Saw by Nick Stowell at Stowell Outdoors Solutions. Both pieces of gear performed beyond expectations.
