    Top quilt vs cover ?

    Hi guys !

I want to use a fleece blanket with my top quilt this automn and I cant chose between these 2 options:

Stack my quilt with the blanket or
use the blanket as a top cover over my hammock ridgeline.

I cant hang right now so, any experiences with this setup guys ? Hard to tell wich setup will procure more heat ?

I've tried something similar but using a poncho liner rather than a fleece blanket. It's almost a toss-up, assuming you can get the fleece blanket to seal around the gaps similarly to the way a purpose built top cover does, but in my subjective and limited experience, I found that stacking a poncho liner and a quilt kept me warmer than using it as a top cover. It's going to be highly dependent on how cold, how much wind and your own comfort level, but if you told me I had to pick one way and stick to it, I'd stack the fleece and the quilt.

What fabric feels best next to you? I prefer NOT to feel the nylon so I wear pj’s. Given your two choices, I’d put the blanket under the TQ. But … I might be more stable - less shifting - to put the blanket on top. That seems it would also make more pockets to hold warm air.
In order to see what few have seen, you must go where few have gone. And DO what few have done.

Ok thank for the feedback guys!

I forgot to say that, if I use the fleece with the top quilt, I will sew the blanket like a top quilt. I will use the fleece first and then the top quilt above.

Probably gonna be warmer with the fleece next to you, but using it as a top cover may be a more comfortable option if the temps go up.

Just read about you wanting to sew it up. Maybe you could go with a convertible design using snaps. That way you can still use it as a top cover on warmer nights. Then maybe you could strategically add some more snaps on the quilt and hammock for holding it in the right place as a top cover as well.

Yes it's a possibility, I did it with a snugpak Jungle blanket, turned it into a top quilt with camsnap
I think I will go this road

I have a DIY fleece top quilt that works great when temps are about 55-60 degrees or above. It's basically fleece backed with ripstop nylon (1.9 oz). I tried the fleece by itself first, and it worked as long as there wasn't a breeze. Turns out that fleece itself is terrible at blocking wind, so I can't imagine it would work very well as a top cover.

In terms of using it with another top quilt, fleece on the inside is the way to go. When it's warm and/or humid, it does a good job wicking moisture away, and when it's cold, it acclimates to your body temp a LOT faster than most nylons, so less temp shock when you climb into the hammock on a cold night.

I like my poncho liners but they are way to short for me to use as a TQ and or blanket.

I would prefer the fleece inside my TQ. A couple of strategically placed KAM snaps would keep it in place and make it modular.
Yes, my pack weighs 70lbs, but it's all light weight gear....
