    XX Stand with oak ends

So I finished my XX stand and I think it is going to be more useful the more I use it. Please be careful if you build this! It is the biggest pair of scissors I have ever seen. When I first put it up, one side came down in a scissor action and it looked dangerous. I then installed a fixed ridgeline, and set the base length to about 22' and now it seems much safer! Both lines would have to break. It took me about 30 hours to complete it, including watching the pain dry. The materials I used were 4=2"x4"x10' pine, 2' of 1/2" conduit, couple of pieces of 1/2" plywood to reinforce the pivot points, oak from discarded oak pallets, 1/2" bolts/washers/nuts, Titebond 3 watered down to seal the wood, rustoleum paint, and 1/8" amsteel. Overall, it was fun to build.

Here are the pieces I made and used. I made oak blocks for the ends to use every inch of the 10' 2x4s, and to stop the ends from splitting and to give some ground wear resistance. They were made smaller than the ends of the 2x4s so I could plane the 2x4s and not try to plane the oak. The conduit was epoxied in the plywood reinforced Pivot points. The conduit could have been 3/4", but whatever a 1/2" bolt fits through.

The oak blocks were glued and screwed to the ends with 3" countersunk stainless steel screws.

Here are the ends finished and I used a router to round off the holes for the amsteel to pass through. I used tarps to stop direct sunlight so the wood did not warp all over the place before I could seal it with 2/3 Titebond 3 and 1/3 water. I found this mixture works well to seal all kinds of wood, and I lroutered ends.jpgearned about it from building wood boats. IMG_20200723_172131901_HDR.jpg

I built 2 stands, and here they are sealed and painted, standing against a shed, and wrapped for storage.

Here is the carabiner connection at the top. The amsteel goes through the top holes twice and exists in the center. So far the stand seems very solid and I have not seen any flexing in a GE 12' at 230lbs. It seems to have the right amount of tilt and I used 34.5", 37.5" and 40.5" for center of bottom hole to center of pivot holes. I want to thank Latherdome for sharing his build and I think these are great stands overall.

    Looks great! Congrats!

Twenty-two feet?? Not sure what you mean, measuring from where to where?

This stand is big but not that big! The 22' is the entire length of the amsteel on the ground. It is one piece going through all 4 leg bottoms. So if you look at the amsteel on the ground as a square, each side is about 5 feet 6 inches.
