Tarp Side Pulls. Wasn't impressed my first time trying to use them.

So I tried to use my tarp side pulls on my last camping trip for the first time. I first tied the two pulls together with some zing-it and then used a prussik to attach another piece of zing-it that I staked out.

It kind of looked like a Y coming off my tarp if that makes sense.

Well it really didn't add any more room at all. Instead of expanding the interior my hammock just had two small bulges coming out the side. About a foot in diameter.

Suggestions? Did I stake out the tarp too tight?

    Thanks!

    Good morning
Did you stake out to the ground then like you would a normally peg the corners, think they work better if they are pulled out and up, either pulled out to a tree nearby or use trekking poles or similar to gain a bit of height to pull them out and then stake the trekking poles to the ground like you would in porch mode

Per hangerdave, pulling them up and out is key. Some sort of arrangement using trekking poles or purpose-made poles over the tarp ridge line works, as does tying the pull-out guy lines to other nearby trees, although those are frequently not available.

Yes I did as there were no trees available nearby. When you say trekking pole are you talking about wrapping the guyline into the ground and then staking it out like you would for staking out porch mode?

That's really cool. Any tutorials on how to do this?

Just make some loops with 3/32" shock cord and loop them around the pole handles and tips. You really need a reasonably taut ridgeline over the tarp to hold the poles up.

It really is as simple as that. Some people make adjustable mini-UCRs or whoopies or spliced loops or other attachment methods. Those are cool but the plain ol' bungees have always worked well for me.

Okay terrific. Thank you. I've never bought shock cord before. Any recommendations or is tall essentially the same quality?

Way better to raise up the tie-out like in the Warbonnet video. You can see on thumbnail for video below or at 6:32 in video.

Dave and Shug: Isn't it such a pain having so much guyline that you have to coil up and tuck into your snakeskins every time you pack up your tarp with this type of tie-out? Have you guys tried putting your poles over the ridgeline with shock cord?

I wonder what the strengths and weaknesses of both set-ups are.
