    Looks to me like he only looks to his left, he seems worried about something in that direction. The tree falls from the opposite direction.

    This is definitely a helpful piece of the puzzle, thank you!

    Another thing that dawned on me while dayhiking earlier was to do some tree-CSI and take a look at the fallen trees I was passing-by, guessing about what made them go down.

    On a few I could spot the remaining weak points that likely contributed to the tree going down (saw some stuff similar to some of the features discussed in this video), but there were several others where I had no idea what happened.

    This happened to me and I can assure you my experience wasn't staged. All my fault in terms of negligence in terms of tying up. I didn't roll out of the way, I was just spared by the Fates. You can read about it here:
