One of the unheralded advantages of advancing years (in my case 66) is that you get a clear shot at "reality" by 3 in the afternoon most days.

Ha! I forgot that I started this thread on Mar 29, 2010. So here we are. It has been alot of fun reading your replies. I actually turn 70 in just over a week from now. My hammock life has been great. New innovations to explore, hammock hangs to visit, and of course, just reading all your comments. Some of your names are very familiar but I dont see you anymore. Id hate to think you gave up hanging, or... even worse. But alas, thats life. It does continue on the other side. I promise. One thing for sure, there a alot of trees up yonder. Its in the Book. Press on ladies and gentlemen...

Ditto Crawldaddy, turn 70 this year. Started making my own gear in 2013 with a cedar strip canoe, that was 5 boats ago, the current one is more or less my design and it works really well.

The same year I started my hammock odyssey with a ErgoCombi, followed by a Tentsile Solo .... at that point I decided I could make my own hammock as well and this forum was awesome. First up was an 11' gathered end, with tarp (I miss KitSapCowboys posts) and quilts ... that required a lot of fighting with the sewing machine, we finally came to terms with me agreeing to follow the rules and the machine agreeing to work if I did.

My first bridge hammock followed the build from Kitsapcowboys ultralight bridge build, which turned out fine, but I found I didn't like the shoulder squeeze. That lead to 4 prototypes and a new design I am very happy with .... I have been in the field with it for 2 years now and it is working well, in fact by the end of the year, I will have made 3 more for friends and family.

I figure if you are learning new stuff, you are doing it right

I'm a cub at 57, and just discovered hammocks a few months ago. I thought I was going to have to give up on motorcycle camping completely, I was tossing and turning all night on my last two trips, even with a cot. It's great to be able to sleep again!

Lot of names from the past in this thread. I'm impressed with the names I still see visiting the forum.

I will turn 80 in mid June. I hammock every night, make several hangs each year, and have a great time. I’m not able to lug that pack very well, but I never rule out a hike every now and then. The woods is my happy place.
If you prepare for failure you will probably succeed.

Ah, good to see some of us 70+ yr olds represented. I recall that one visit to the old white haired barber and as he was cutting my hair, I looked down at the apron and asked, “Whose hair are you cutting?” Turns out, I had become a white haired old guy too.
In order to see what few have seen, you must go where few have gone. And DO what few have done.

Same here. I prefer the woods over the beach (unless it's a beach on a mountain pond in the woods). I will be 53 later this year.

Used to car camp (campgrounds & backcountry). Due to various life issues took about a 10 year break and a buddy asked me to hammock camp with him at a family campground in 2018 and I was hooked. Much more comfortable than the cabin tent and cot I used to use and easier to set-up/tear down. Because of hammocking, I started backpacking and camping at remote sites. Sometimes just going off trail and finding a spot. To me, this is much more enjoyable than car camping (although that still has it's place) - fewer people, fewer rules, no fees (most of the time), and no check-out times.
