VIDEO: Granddaddy Basin in the High Uintas

After not getting back to Utah for a few years, I finally made it to the High Uintas!

Our plan was to go into the Granddaddy Basin and then figure out our route from there. There are so many lakes and trails to explore it gives you quite a few options. The basin see a lot of people and is considered a high-use area. We did see plenty of people during our trip. We had heard that Fern Lake was less popular than other lakes in the basin so we went that way first. That didn't quite pan out the way we had hoped for so we backtracked to Granddaddy Lake and then moved on you Mohawk Lake. We ended up staying there a couple days before walking out.

    Thanks for watching!

Outstanding! I love that whole area, but haven't been to Granddaddy specifically for a long time. The other end of the through-trail, Mirror Lake area, is SUPER crowded right now, so I'm keeping my distance.

    Great video!

We did a loop from the Mirror Lake area a few years back in the fall and it was crowded even then. You can understand why though, it is a spectacular area!

Wonderful! I've got a picture of me standing on a snow bank several feet deep in that area July 4th, 1985. I've been all over those mountains, but never got to hang a hammock there. But I have up in the Wind Rivers. Great trip report!

That is awesome! I hope to get around most of those mountains before I'm done. It's getting harder to hang hammocks in the Uintas though, because there is so much beetle kill. In some areas there are more dead trees than live ones.

Yes, I noticed that. It is sort of depressing to see all of those dead trees which were alive last time I was there, probably about 1985. Which is about the year the drought started, and it never really let up for very long after that. I think the drought weakens the trees and makes them susceptible to the beetles. Not just the Uintas, but all over the west.

The bark beetle has been devastating that area (Uintas). There have been a few human caused wildfires in that area this year, including 2 currently burning. As sad as it would be, fire may be the best thing to regenerate growth inn that area.

Great trip report. Will be there in a couple of weeks myself. It's a fun area.
