Whoopie sling with 2 inch straps

My local parks require 2 inch straps, which I totally agree with for a park. What I want to know is if I could use a 2 inch strap with Dutch's titanium toggles with a whoopie sling, and if I use the 2 inch straps what is the best way to attach to the tree. I want to use dutch hooks but I do not think that they will fit, maybe a carabiner?

Edit: off topic but how did whoopie slings get their name?

"Best" is a very subjective term, but if it were me, just sew an eye on one end and loop it through. no hardware required.

If its for a park where weight doesnt matter, then use any of the lightweight climbing caribiners (about $6 each at REI). But even then, a sewn eye is still helpful.

Whoopie slings predate their use as hammock suspension, so maybe an arborist would know as they use both whoopie slings and loopie slings. Samson Rope and Marlow both sell them but neither web site has any history on them:

Just because you have a 2 inch strap around the tree, that doesn’t mean you have to continue it to the hammock. I’m not a Dutchware expert but most of the buckles I’ve seen are for 1 inch straps - what Dutch sells on his web site. Same for other vendors. So you could wrap those 2” straps around the tree and connect a carabiner to them. Then you could attach your 1 inch webbing to that and run it to your hammock.

In short, there are dozens of ways you can connect the hammock to the tree end. All the park is requiring is the wrap around the tree be 2 inches, not the rest of the suspension.

If you find a friendly park person, you might ask them what the ruling would be if you put small sticks/twigs vertically between the webbing warp and the tree. That way, even though the webbing would be 1 inch, the sticks might distribution the force as well or better than 2 inch straps.

Oh, I see. You are asking about hooks, not buckles. I don’t know where your hooks would go with either 1 inch or 2 inch straps. As Peeeetey said - a Marlin Spike Hitch is a MSH, whether it’s 1” or 2” webbing. and of course the whoopie goes on the knot, not on the toggle.

Where are you attaching your Dutch Hooks such that you think there might be a problem?

2" Tree Hugger to 1" Tree Strap

Depending on the size of the trees in your local parks, SOLUTION:
2” X 4’ Tree Hugger, 6’ to 15’ (your preference) 1” Tree Strap, Dutch’s Titanium Toggles, whoopee sling.

Larks head the 1” Tree Strap to one of the loops of the 2” Tree Hugger. Circle tree and insert loose end of Tree Strap into other loop of Tree Hugger. Tie Marlinspike Hitch in 1” Tree Strap, insert Toggle, hang whoopee on the knot.

You could also use a climbing rated Carabiner to attach the 2” Tree Hugger to the tree.

A marlin-spike hitch will work fine with 2-inch webbing on Dutch's toggles.

Yes, you could use a carabiner. If you want to go hardware-free you could use some type of amsteel button-knot or soft-shackle. I use the type shown in this video, which would work fine with 2-inch straps:

It works just fine with a Dutch toggle to whoopies.

Thank you everyone for your replies I have decided to go with the 2 inch seat belt straps and use the toggles with a whoopie sling I will put it onto my next order with dutch. (I like to get all my ideas together and put in one big order before each season)
