    Quilt/Backpacking storage ideas

We have amassed a ton of quilts and backpacking gear and it has overrun our hallway closet. We have decided to dedicate our smallest bedroom to outdoor activities like backpacking, so I am looking for gear room pictures and ideas. Specifically how you would handle quilt storage. Just looking for ideas because my wife will be out of town for a few days and it sounds like a good project.

    Thanks in advance

3M Command Hooks work great for hanging backpacks and top quilts. Underquilts are a bit of a challenge but they'll hang fine as well. You want the ones with the metal hooks. The size medium can hold up to 3 lb. and the large can hold up to 5 lb. The bonus of the Command hooks is no holes in your walls and you can move them around if need be.

Following only because I dream of having a gear room! I close my eyes and envision a closet full of quilts... and smile.

I like the 12 and 17 gallon black totes with yellow lids available at Home Depot and Costco. They stack well, hold a lot and require no shelves or hooks. Keep dust out too.
If you prepare for failure you will probably succeed.

When I worked at a “home” store (grocery, furniture, toys, automotive, clothing, etc.) they were often throwing away fixtures/racks that had been used to display merchandise. Rather than hooks on a wall, if I had a gear room, I’d have a horizontal bar, away from the wall (something like a hammock pipe stand) and I’d hang my larger quilt storage bags on that. Or the quilts would be out of the storage bag altogether and hang from the bar (requires a higher bar).

I’d have a collection of clear plastic storage boxes so I could separate gear - like tarps, tents, hammocks, hammock suspension, tarp suspension, cooking gear, etc.
In order to see what few have seen, you must go where few have gone. And DO what few have done.

I have about a dozen total quilts in our collection. I keep each quilt in its own Sterilite 106qt (100L) latching storage bin. My 40° and 50° sets actually don't require separate bins for the UQ and TQ, but the ones rated lower than 40° are 1 quilt per bin.

    Here are some of them.

It occurred to me recently that if you want to use your storage area for more then just storage, a nice-looking and functional way to store quilts (and other items) would be large rectangular baskets on shelves. You could lay a piece of fabric on top as a dust cover if you wish and the baskets would let the items breathe. It'd be a little pricey though.

Decided to start hanging things from the wall today. The storage shelves are still messy, but I will get them organized. Figured since it's 90 degrees and humid outside that an inside project was the best option.

Looks good. The downside of course is now you can see how lonely your backpacks are. They definitely need another friend or 2 to hang with.
