Knots are awesome. They have gotten me through many challenges.

Animated Knots by Grog also has a handy phone app (in the google play store; i imagine there's one in the apple app store, too).

But when I embarked on learning the knot-tying skills I didn't learn in childhood, I didn't want to be overwhelmed by too much info at once, so I got started with Six Knots for Everyday Life by Philip Peterson

I used to own a bandana that had several knots illustrated on it. It was great since it served double duty and was not an extra weight. I think I got it at GoingGear, but you can probably find it elsewhere, too.

Obviously, knot tying can be a hobby in itself, and although I love to use knots instead of hardware I am not a knot hobbyist per se but rather a seeker of the simplest practical knots for specific jobs.

When just starting out it it makes sense to me to practice and learn knots that you're going to use all the time, and to use a cord that's good for tying knots such as braided polyester (Lawson Guywire, Atwood Tactical cord, etc) and not Zing-it, which is too slippery.

As an example, pick perhaps 3 candidates for each "job," such as adjustable hitches like Midshipman's, Farrimond and Grip Hitch, and practice those and figure out which one you like best.

What you end up with is a small repertoire of simple knots that have wide applications that you can tie blindfolded, while asleep, backward, forward and upside down, left and right, while wearing mittens.

There has already been some great suggestions for you, I really like the Geoffrey Budworth books. His drawings are easy to follow. From him the complete book of Knots is a favorite.
