Are the XLC and the Eldorado really the same?

A friend who loves WB stuff told me the XLC and the Eldorado are the same hammock except the shelf in the bug net on the XLC. If that's the case I'm not sure why the XLC gets so much attention over the Eldorado (I could be wrong about that too). Wouldn't a gear sack hung from ridge line be similar?

I'm looking to get my first WB hammock.

Your friend is correct. With no net attached, either of those hammocks are just symmetical gathered end hammocks with zipper track along the hems.

And the Eldorado gets plenty of love around here!

I just like the laziness of being able to sling stuff into the shelf. Plus it holds a bit more. If it was a bigger weight difference I'd probably switch from XLC to Eldorado but it's only a couple ounces. Others like the ability to stake out the shelf and pull down the "wall side" of the hammock a bit but I almost never stake out that side.

The cool thing is if you ever decide to try, you only need to buy an Eldorado net for $40. You can reuse the same hammock body.

Yeah it seems the small weight gain is worth it. Curious why they're so different in price. SL Eldorado is $125 and SL XLC is $180.

Would you trust that shelf with a water bottle?

Very cool, thanks for the tip, somehow I've missed that in all the discussions.

How Warbonnet set their prices is their own business, but there's a fair bit more labor and material that go into the XLC net. It's got fabric that's matched to the hammock, rather than just no-see-um mesh, plus an extra set of tie-outs, and just more stitching in general.

The shelf itself can certainly support a water bottle. If you have it tied out with shock cord to make it a "shelf" rather than a "saddlebag" the weight of a water bottle will make it sag. Still easily accessible.

You bet. Then again, if your XLC is the original style (not the original Blackbird, but the XLC before they updated it circa October 2017), I don't know if it still mixes and matches with the nets they're selling now. If you have the XLC that allows you to flip the net to change lay directions, then you could buy an Eldorado net and it would fit your hammock.

Thanks! So many options. The folks over at WB sure have figured out some great patterns.

I don't have my XLC yet. Borrowing a friends (latest version) while I figure out my gear. Probably will wait until their next sale.

Good to know about the water bottle.

My Eldorado is my go-to hammock for the last many trips. Yes, just an XLC without the shelf.
