First attempt at a DIY UQ

Being new to hammocks and a fierce DIYer I cut up an older synthetic bag and sewed some loops and used about 8 shock cord loops on each side. It's heavy as heck and I made a mistake using 1/8" shock cord instead of 1/16", it's way too tense.

Used guy line tensioners on each loop. Ha, this thing is klunky but might use it on my kids new Hennessy Cub.

I did my first DIY UQ from some Eddie Bauer blankets last year. I didn't trim the width so comes up and the sides about a foot. A good wind block but I think I'll trim the width next time.
It's a good feeling to learn from each trial.

nice! Yeah just going for it is pretty fun. The wind block could be the next idea to catch!

For my project, I made three, one for me and two for the kids. For mine, I sewed on a grosgrain channel. Then I noticed I was going to be short on material to do that for the kids' so I cut it into small segments for loops, as you described.
The difference in the way they hung was a lesson, the loops allowed the UQ to bunch up at the low point so I usually have to tie the end adjustment bungee to the gathered ends to keep it spread out. The one with a full channel doesn't bunch up because the grosgrain stiffness keeps it spread out. However, this stiffness made closing the ends of the UQ, with a channel, around the hammock harder, so maybe the loops are better there?
I'm thinking about ordering a pair of the Blue Ridge Activ down blankets for my next DIY trial. I'll trim the width and extend the length as I have seen in some online instructions.

Grosgrain ribbon is a strip of material often used as a reinforcement edge on fabrics like tarps. I'm not an expert but I assume there are different thickness options.
I used a length of the grosgrain ribbon folded over to create a channel for the shock cord.
I'm guessing there are better options but I am still learning and improving my skills.

Gotcha. My first experiment was just to use strap scraps and stitch the heck out of them.
