Backpacking and Hanging Newbie from Georgia

    Hey Everyone,

My name is James, and I am an outdoor and camping enthusiast turned backpacker. Went on my first four day trip on the Chattooga River Trail a few weeks ago with my four legged boy Kodak. It was absolutely awful, and now I am addicted. Made it to the trail head way to late, had a storm dump on me in the first 30 mins, and made a wrong turn missing any close by campsites. Set up camp just before a second down poor, and tried to get some sleep. Repacking my bag I began to realize "I'm on a river trail, why am I carrying 5 liters of water..." My pack was way over packed at somewhere in the 30 plus lbs. The next three days were pretty much the same, rain, rain, and more rain. My protection was a Walmart Ozark Trail poncho. I toughed it out though, and really learned a lot about myself. Now, I just want to get back out there after doing a few weeks of research, ordering some massively lighter gear, and leaving the kitchen sink at home.

Welcome from a fellow Georgian! I can honestly say that several of my early hikes/trips weren't near as pleasant as they should've been but after each trip I learned some things that went wrong and some that went right and made changes for future trips. Still doing that even now but the changes are much smaller now! Please make sure you watch Shug's Hammocking for Newbs series as it will flatten your learning curve immensely.

    McMoser, welcome from Denton NC.
With your enthusiasm, your treks will be more fun.
I try to carry map, compass and phone with map apps and spare battery for phone, and still the earth folds back on itself and I’m not where I thunk I was.
Off subject but somehow I’ve gotten a font on phone that is not font I had
The I used to be straight up and down with no dodads on top and bottom of I

I also carry a water filter and try to camp near water sources to eliminate extra weight

Even though you weren’t all alone—Your 4 legged boy Kodak is great.
Sometimes fun to trek with one to three others. Camaraderie, exchange of skills and extra gear to cover minor hurdles that could be major if solo trekking.

Possibly see you at Yates Hang this fall, it’s car camping, but we always have a few trekkers that overnight backpack on Uwharrie trail.
