    Repellent alternative ?

I do not like bug nets on my hammock, they seem trap stale air in,and keep fresh air out.I really do not like spraying myself with repellent either so I’m looking for any alternative for repelling insects while Hanging out, thanks.

    Repellent alternative ?

Burn Citronella candles not too close to your hammock/tarp

Spray, soak, and dry permethrin on your hammock, clothes, and any other types of fabric. It will kill mosquitoes on contact and cause neurological issues in ticks. It is a lot better than deet.

Picaradin lotion works pretty well, but I'm not sure if that's any better for you than spraying yourself.

You could also try a thermacell.

As others already says Picardin as lotion on skin and permethrin on gear before hiking are best bets IMHO.

+1 on both of these suggestions, especially permethrin on clothing and hammock fabrics. You can spray it on or mix up a solution and soak your gear.

Good reports in this thread for Thermocell.

Picaridin doesn't work for me so I use Deet (Deep Woods Off or similar). I have friends who tested some Picaridin on a trip in the Adirondacks a couple of years ago and for them it did not stop the biting flies, so luckily I carried enough Deet to share although it was almost gone by the end of our 3-night trip.

However I've read that Deet is bad for hammock fabrics so I make sure to wipe as much of it off as I can with Wet Ones wipes or with a wet bandanna before crawling into the hammock with integrated bug net. Combined with wearing wind pants/shirt for sleeping, I'm hoping those are adequate precautions...

Thermacells are also said to work well.

I have 3 Thermacells. Will sell cheap. I use them for car camping, find them to large for motorcycle trips. Switched to the wrist bands or Off mosquito coils.

I take odorless garlic, apple cider vinegar capsules, and B complex vitamins daily. Not recommending anyone else do it but bugs either think I stink or they don't smell me.

Day clothes including the hat are treated with permethrin but not the hammock.I do like a netted hammock for reasons other than mosquitoes which include warmer in winter and as a small barrier against other curious mammalian type critters.

I do carry a small bottle of picardin but have not used it in a long time as it is just not necessary.I never treat my hammock as it is pointless and the underquilt serves as a barrier anyway.

Cold weather is the best bug repellent I've ever found.
