Absolutely treat that water after collection. When I look at my tarp after a trip - with the dust/pitch/bird deposits, etc. I’d be hesitant run water through that and into a glass for drinking. Collecting water from the sky has been around for a LONG time. But it usually goes directly into some “catch” container directly - not first run off material that containing a variety of other substances.
In order to see what few have seen, you must go where few have gone. And DO what few have done.

I Plan on letting it rain for 10 minutes to clean the tarp and also inspect for bird deposits.
I didn’t think I would have to treat the water but better be safe than sorry.
Boil or chemical treatment better for this instance?

You could just filter it as well. I've poured my collected water into my gravity system to get the shag-nasties out.

So if my friend Bubba carries a dedicated DCF ground tarp that's 3x5feet more or less do you reckon he could use it as a rain tarp without any issues?Tarps never been treated with anything after it left the factory.Bubba was planning on pitching it in foul weather in case he needed a dry place to do emergency constitutional research in the middle of the night.

I have collected water from tarps regularly and not run it through filters. Simply began collecting after it has rained for a while to rinse any grubbies, then poured through bandana to remove any tree bitties. Balsam flavored water is pretty good!
