    I believe I used a single strand from a cat5 cable to do some 1.3mm UHMWPE cord. I wouldn't say it's a great choice but it worked and I happened to have it literally lying around. I do like some plastic yarn needles for most of my splicing work.

    To widen the hole I use small knitting needles - bought as a pack of plenty at Joanns.

    To pull through, I use the fids I got from DutchWare or a wire I picked up for free from a music store. It was scrape guitar string. It’s a long narrow loop (oval) and I bound and taped the two ends to make a handle of sorts for pulling.

    Thanks for sharing. I've had some successes using the wire method. Your suggestion about widening the path with the knitting needles sounds good.
