Hi all. I’m currently hiking the Malerweg in southeast Germany. It’s sublime — loving it. But I believed the posts online (mostly in German/Czech) that said camping is super illegal/the park rangers will find you etc. And with that in mind, I booked hostels. Dammit! Now only are there a gazillion perfect trees here, there’s are also a LOT of very lightly used side trails, and side-side trails, any of which would lead to a perfect stealth hang. I wish I’d brought my hammocking gear; I will the next time!

The upshot: the malerweg is more than worth doing, and if you’re at all stealthy, it would be very do-able with a hammock. Easiest would be south of the river and east of the Bad Schandau area, towards Schmilka/the Schrammstein area, but it could be done throughout if you were wise about it. I’m writing this because I wish I’d known that. Happy trails, y’all 😁
